The Bengal junior doctors’ forum has expressed its outrage regarding the rape and murder case at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, while also advocating for a secure and safe working environment in government hospitals. They have indicated that they are considering a return to a cease work action due to ongoing assaults on on-duty doctors and threats from leaders of the ruling party.
Dr. Kinjal Nanda, a representative of the protesting doctors, stated, “We feel compelled to resume our cease work, as this is the only means to compel the Government and police administration to acknowledge our grievances. Despite the tragic incident involving the rape and murder of our postgraduate colleague and the Supreme Court’s directives, the Government appears to have taken minimal action to enhance our safety within the hospitals.” This statement follows three separate attacks on junior doctors across different medical colleges in recent days.
Dr. Maity, another leader of the Junior Doctors’ Forum, reported, “Recently, doctors have faced violence from patient parties at Sagar Dutta Medical College, followed by incidents at the National Medical College and Rampurhat Medical College. Our female colleagues are being assaulted, and male staff members are also being attacked. We do not feel secure in our work environment.”
Another doctor remarked on the threats they face, noting, “We are contemplating a return to our cease work. Daily, we are confronted with threats from leaders and MLAs, including one who has vowed to mobilize 50,000 individuals to Behrampore Medical College. Under such circumstances, how can we continue to work? It feels as though another tragedy is imminent.”
A female doctor highlighted that in many instances, “female doctors and staff are being warned of ‘RG Kar-like treatment,’ raising the question of how we can function in an atmosphere of fear.
It appears that there is a concerted effort against us. We wish to fulfill our duties, but we do not wish to risk our lives.” The junior doctors’ ultimatum follows closely on the heels of these alarming developments.
