Kolkata doctor rape-murder Live Updates: The West Bengal Junior Doctors Forum, which is spearheading the agitation, will send a delegation to the CBI office today.
Kolkata doctor rape-murder case live updates: Sanjay Roy, the civic volunteer accused of the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was sent to 14-day judicial custody on Friday. He was produced in Sealdah Court in Kolkata. Healthcare services were severely hit at state-run hospitals in Bengal, as junior doctors continued their strike for the 15th consecutive day to protest against the attack. This came despite Supreme Court’s appeal to doctor’s to resume work.
Meanwhile, former RG Kar Hospital Principal Sandip Ghosh, who is at the center of a storm following the brutal rape-murder, was questioned by the CBI over the rape-murder for the seventh straight day yesterday. A local court has allowed the CBI plea for conducting a polygraph test on Ghosh. Meanwhile, under fire from all quarters over her government’s mishandling of the case, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for strict laws to ensure that perpetrators face justice in fast-track courts within 15 days.
What the SC said: The Supreme Court asked the West Bengal government not to penalise those peacefully demanding justice for the junior doctor and urged the striking doctors to return to work, assuring them of protection from reprisals. Questioning the sequence and timing of the legal formalities conducted by police, the court said it is very surprising that the post-mortem was conducted between 6:10 pm and 7:10 pm on August 9, even before the case of unnatural death was registered.
