Former captain Ricky Ponting believes that Australia will secure the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a 3-1 victory over India, citing the visitors’ challenge of taking 20 wickets in a Test match as their “greatest hurdle” in the absence of Mohammed Shami.
Australia is eager to break their winless streak in the Border-Gavaskar series, having lost all four series to India since the 2014-15 season, including notable defeats on home soil in 2018-19 and 2020-21.
In light of India’s recent historic 0-3 whitewash against New Zealand, Ponting asserts that the current circumstances favor the Australian team. “Probably more so now (than before),” he remarked regarding Australia’s prospects during the ICC Review Show.
Shami has been sidelined since last November due to injuries, and Ponting emphasizes that his absence significantly weakens India’s bowling lineup, which includes Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, and the uncapped Harshit Rana.
Ponting stated, “Shami leaves a substantial gap in that bowling group. Back in August, there was still uncertainty about his fitness.”
He further noted, “I believe that taking 20 wickets in a Test match will be the biggest challenge for India. I think their current batting lineup will perform adequately here.”
While praising Australia for being a more cohesive unit, Ponting acknowledged that India should not be underestimated when the series commences on November 22 in Perth. “I think India will manage to win a Test match during the five-match series,” he predicted.
“However, I still believe that Australia appears to be more settled and experienced, making them a formidable opponent at home. Therefore, I will maintain my prediction of a 3-1 outcome.”
