Following Donald Trump’s re-election as President of the United States, Russia expressed on Wednesday that President Vladimir Putin is receptive to the idea of engaging in a “constructive dialogue” with the United States, emphasizing that the trajectory of relations between Washington and Moscow is contingent upon the American administration.
These comments were made by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov in the wake of Trump’s victory over his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, in a fiercely contested election.
In response to an inquiry regarding the potential deterioration of US-Russia relations should President Putin choose not to extend congratulations to Trump, Peskov indicated that while Putin is open to dialogue, it remains to be seen how Washington’s approach to discussions will evolve once Trump assumes office.
President Putin has consistently expressed his willingness to engage in a constructive dialogue founded on principles of justice, equality, and mutual respect for each other’s concerns. This commitment has been reaffirmed by President Putin on numerous occasions, as reported by Peskov.
However, he noted that the current stance of the US administration is quite different. “Let’s wait and see what unfolds in January,” Peskov remarked.
Trump is set to be inaugurated as president on January 20, 2025.
Peskov stated, “It is nearly impossible to deteriorate relations between the United States and Russia further, as they are already at an unprecedented low.”
Additionally, Peskov declined to comment on Putin’s response to the results of the US presidential election, stating, “The president’s reaction? I cannot provide any information on that.”
“Nevertheless, we certainly consider the reports that come from Washington,” he added.
